Dr. Kamal Mahamedpour: There are No Restrictions on Knowledge and Scholars in Islam; The West Violated Scientific Democracy by Assassinating Scientists
Dr. Kamal Mahamedpour, a faculty member of the Faculty of Telecommunication Engineering at Khajeh Nasir Toosi University of Technology (KNTU), expressed appreciation for the timely initiative by the Institute for Research in Fundamental Sciences (IPM) in holding the “Rising of the Wise against Sophicide” conference. However, he also criticized the Ministry of Science for failing to play an adequate role during sensitive periods and underscored the unconditional importance of science and scholars from the perspective of Islam.
Dr. Mahamedpour began by thanking the conference founders but expressed discontent with the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology: “The Ministry of Science, which also carries the name of science and knowledge, should be reproached because it should have been the custodian of this [initiative] and carried out activities in this regard.”
Referring to the recent “12-day imposed war,” he criticized the Ministry of Science for closing universities during that period: “The universities should have remained open, and the activities of universities, especially regarding issues surrounding this 12-day Sacred Defense and the role of academics and professors, should have been active and carried out appropriate efforts.”
The Status of Science and Scholars in Islam:
Regarding the core theme of the conference and the status of knowledge, Dr. Mahamedpour asserted that in the Islamic perspective and the system of the Islamic Republic, knowledge and scholars hold a very appropriate and highly significant position, with no restrictions on acquiring or disseminating knowledge: “We have heard from the Immaculate [Imam] regarding the acquisition of knowledge: ‘Seek knowledge even unto China.’”
He added: “There should be no restrictions regarding knowledge, scientists, and scholars. Instead, conditions should be provided so that knowledge can easily develop and be placed at the service of humanity.” He stressed that governments must support scientists so that science can contribute to the development of people’s social and individual lives.
Western Contradiction to Scientific Democracy:
The KNTU professor then pointed out the contradictory behavior of the West: “Unfortunately, the West—the US and Europe, and indeed the usurping and criminal Israel—have practically violated the thesis of democracy, especially concerning science and scholars, despite all the slogans being chanted by the West under the title of democracy, particularly scientific and knowledge democracy.”
Dr. Mahamedpour concluded by inviting academics and researchers to respond to this anti-scientific and anti-human act through their attendance at the conference.
