IUST Faculty Member Emphasizes Professors’ Role in Political and Ethical Education
Dr. Javad Marzban Rad: Professors Have a Responsibility Beyond Science / I Will Present the Concept of “Sophicide Words” at the “Rising Against Sophicide” Conference
Dr. Javad Marzban Rad, a faculty member of the School of Automotive Engineering at Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST), announced his readiness to present an article and speak at the International Conference for “Rising of the Wise against Sophicide.” He underscored the profound educational and social role professors play in society.
Dr. Marzban Rad first addressed the role of professors, which extends beyond scientific knowledge, in shaping students: “Professors can be very influential regarding the students they meet face-to-face in the classroom; even far beyond scientific topics, such as ethical, political, social, and even religious issues.”
He stressed that a point raised by a professor on cultural or social issues can leave an impression on the student’s mind that “can be far greater than the effect a family can have on the student.”
The IUST professor asserted: “Professors can, and we can even say they have a responsibility, to pay attention to these issues alongside the scientific topics they teach—issues that can be influential in a student’s future career and life.”
Dr. Marzban Rad then expressed his interest in participating in the conference: “I became interested in giving a speech or presenting an article at this conference under the title ‘Sophicide Words’ (or ‘Words That Kill Wisdom’).”
He explained the concept of “Sophicide Words” as being tied to the integrity of language and concepts: “When we use a word, we must know that specific concepts exist beneath that word. If a word is used in its correct place, it means the ‘right of that word has been fulfilled.’ Conversely, the incorrect use of a word is tantamount to betrayal of that word.” He identified this misuse of concepts as one of the methods “used by colonial states after the 19th century in the subjugation of countries.”
